I’ve been drawing and painting since I was a child and originally wanted to grow up to be an elementary school art teacher. Then I had to teach a class when I was older which quickly changed my mind and career goal. Food was always very important to my family, from tradition to plain enjoyment (and building vacations around restaurants). I joined the hospitality industry at the ripe age of 16 and seventeen years later, I’m still there!
In 2011, I started with a restaurant group who allowed me to show my creative side on the five chalkboards found throughout the location I was managing. Throughout my almost five years with the company, I drew chalkboard after chalkboard and guests were enjoying them and taking pictures with them. This was it, this is what I loved. In 2016 I joined another restaurant group who also had multiple chalkboards all over the restaurant, including two sandwich boards for the sidewalk. My team asked me why I hadn’t created an Instagram account; great question! I had no idea how to do it. One of my hosts at the time took my phone, downloaded the app, and she created my page and dubbed my art “Chalkboards by AE” which is now my company’s namesake (and still my Instagram handle).
On Instagram, residents and companies were posting pictures of my chalkboards. In August 2017, I was featured on ARLnow (https://www.arlnow.com/2017/08/09/the-woman-behind-circas-beautiful-chalkboard-designs/) and received my first client through that article. I thought to myself, I can make a career out of this. I left my restaurant job in October 2017 and here I am! Trying to do just that.
